History Of Halloween For Kids
With Halloween less than a month away, it's probably a good time to look back on the history of the spookiest night of the year. Here are all the questions you want to be answered in this special Kids Edition of the History of Halloween!
Who Invented Halloween?
The first recorded Halloween incidents can be traced back to a 2000 years old Celtic festival called Samhain, which was celebrated at the end of the summer harvest.
The Celts believed that on the 31st of October, the dead's spirits roamed freely in towns and villages. They were worried that the spirits would harm them by damaging their crops, possessing people and spreading incurable sickness.
Their response? To dress up in scary costumes made from animal hides (nothing like today's more comfortable Halloween costumes) and start huge bonfires to turn them away!
So while Halloween is celebrated in North America, particularly the United States and Canada, it looks like the ancient Celts who lived in Northern Europe actually created it!
Why is Halloween called Halloween?
The origin of the name stems from the fact that Halloween is on the evening before All Hallows' Day, so it was called All Hallows' Eve. Over time, the name was shortened to Halloween.
When Does the History of Trick or Treat Start?
This, too, started with the Celts.
As the ritual of Halloween kicked off, a new practise called souling had developed.
Souling would occur when "poor people would visit the houses of the rich and receive pastries called soul cakes, in exchange for promises to pray for the homeowners' dead relatives." In some cases, younger people would visit their neighbours' houses and sing a song or perform a "trick" to receive nuts or fruit.
It wasn't until the 1920s, when America adopted it, that the term was created.
So, Is That How Trick or Treat Works Today?
Yes, it sure is!
Everyone knows how Halloween works in modern times.
Children dress as their favourite Halloween costumes before taking to the streets with their parents or friends.
They go door-to-door with buckets, asking for sweets from their neighbours. It's a tradition that is now settled into North American history. And still remains one of the most popular and scariest nights of the year!
